To Bind Up the Nation's Wounds

This statue of Abraham Lincoln and his son, Tad, sits at the Tredegar Iron Works to commemorate Lincoln's April 4, 1865 visit to Richmond just two days after its fall to Union troops.  The pair sits before the words "To Bind Up the Nation's Wounds," a phrase from Lincoln's second inaugural address.  Lincoln's visit to Richmond occurred shortly before Lee's surrender at Appomattox and Lincoln's assassination, events that would end the war and catapult the nation into the process of reconciliation and Reconstruction.
